Key to success: Get the word out. "We have our own mailing list, plus we do radio advertising," says owner Lorie Carkhuff. The mailing list is used about six times a year when Carkhuff sends out discount coupons that can be used when purchasing anything in the store. She doesn't do radio advertising in November, January or February, but the rest of the year Carkhuff runs about 25 radio spots each week.

The other key to their success, says Carkhuff, is one every small business owner can identify with: "Lots of hours!"
