Inaugural opens era of change

RUTGERS UNIVERSITY: In a ceremony that married subdued tradition
with jubilation, New Jersey's academic community gathered yesterday to
inaugurate Rutgers University's 19th president, Richard L. McCormick.

Representatives from 89 U.S. universities and academic organizations and
 hundreds of Rutgers professors processed into Louis Brown Athletic
Center, wearing robes in a crazy-quilt of colors: black, red, gold, green,
gray, blue, orange and brown, and bearing banners from the university's
 29 colleges and schools in New Brunswick,
Newark and Camden.
